Best performing cars of 2010

Euro NCAP is glad to announce the five best performing cars of 2010. To be selected as safest cars of their categories, these vehicles achieved a high overall score and attained the coveted five star rating.

Last year, Euro NCAP crash tested twenty nine vehicles, 65% of which reached the five star rating, compared to 90% in 2009. This decrease of 25% clearly shows that Euro NCAP's criteria to reach a five stars are now tougher. While Euro NCAP's poorest results of 2010 were achieved by the Citroen Nemo with three stars and by the Landwind CV9 which received only two stars, the top achievers by category are:

• Executive category: BMW 5 Series
• Small Family category: Alfa Romeo Giulietta
• Supermini category: Honda CR-Z
• Small off-road 4×4 category: Kia Sportage
• Small MPV category: Toyota Verso

To be top achiever means that the car accomplished a high combined score based on the scores in each of the individual four areas of Euro NCAP's assessment, while notably exceeding the thresholds for a 5 star overall rating. In addition to the top five achievers, the Suzuki Swift, Kia Venga, BMW X1, VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra, Citroen C4 all exceeded the 80% mark in overall score putting them on the list of best performing cars of 2010.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General says: "Every year, car manufacturers constantly work to innovate and make their cars better and safer for the driver, whatever the size of the vehicle. The presence in these categories of high performing 5 star cars demonstrates car manufacturers' commitment to safety for all sizes of vehicles."

Euro NCAP is now performing Electronic Stability Control tests as part of the overall assessment. Since 2009, Euro NCAP requires ESC systems to be fitted as standard and will from now on be measuring its performance when testing the vehicles. ESC is meant to reduce the number of deaths and injuries resulting from crashes in which the driver loses directional control of the vehicle, including those resulting in vehicle rollover.

Automobile Club d'Italia joins Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP is glad to announce that Automobile Club d'Italia, better known as ACI, will formally become Euro NCAP's twelfth member as of 1st January 2011.

With 1.1 million members, ACI is the largest association representing the interest of Italian car drivers at the national and international levels. Since its foundation in 1905, ACI has grown into an important network for motoring consumers in Italy. The organization actively disseminates and promotes road safety issues such as the risks of drink driving, active and passive safety devices, and road safety education. Enrico Gelpi, ACI's President says: 'By joining Euro NCAP, ACI will further strengthen its role as an important advocate for safer cars on Italian roads.'

Italy is the second largest European automotive market and has the highest rate of car ownership in Europe – 60 cars per 100 inhabitants, with around 36 million circulating cars. As a Euro NCAP member, ACI will sponsor the testing of at least one car model per year and contribute actively to the development of the program. Euro NCAP is composed of motoring, consumer and insurance organizations as well as seven European Governments. However, until now Italy was not directly represented in Euro NCAP.

Euro NCAP publishing first Chinese vehicle rating

Today, Euro NCAP releases the crash test results for fourteen cars, including the first Chinese-manufactured vehicle it has tested. Ten cars achieved Euro NCAP's maximum award of five stars, three received four stars and one received a two star result.

After an unsuccessful first introduction onto the European market in 2005, Landwind returns with the CV9, a mid-sized MPV that achieved two stars in Euro NCAP's assessment. Eager to erase its poor safety record, Landwind hopes to make a strong comeback with the CV9, which according to the Chinese carmaker 'has been revamped to meet the strictest European safety standards'. In comparison to competitive vehicles in this segment, however, the car remains poorly equipped, lacking a side protection airbag, a head protection device and electronic stability control. The car was limited to a two star rating by its overall performance although it came close to meeting the three star threshold for adult occupant protection.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP's Secretary General, says 'It is clear that vehicles from China, India and other emerging countries will in the next few years become commonplace on European roads. Euro NCAP will ensure that consumers know what levels of safety are offered by these vehicles. By highlighting differences in safety performance, we aim to drive the safety of all cars towards and beyond the high levels we see from more well-established manufacturers. We are confident that Landwind and others will rise to this challenge.'

The Kia Venga has been reassessed shortly after its market introduction and has been awarded with a five star result. In February 2010, Euro NCAP highlighted some weaknesses in the car's performance in the frontal impact test leading to a four star rating. Kia have made structural changes to the front of the car and have refined the restraint systems to improve the protection of adult and child occupants. With this, Kia have demonstrated their wish to achieve the highest level of safety for its vehicles.

The only executive car in this release - the Jaguar XF - surprisingly received four stars, its rating limited by adult and child occupant protection. In the side pole impact of the XF, chest protection was rated as weak and the car's seat and head restraint provided marginal whiplash protection.

The Volkswagen Amarok received four stars and, with 17 points, is the pickup offering best pedestrian protection so far tested by Euro NCAP. However, a poor level of chest protection was offered in the side pole test. From the same stable, Euro NCAP has tested the five door MPV VW Sharan. This car has exactly the same platform, interior fittings and levels of safety equipment as the new Seat Alhambra and the five star rating applies to both vehicles.

Finally, Euro NCAP's other top scorers with five star results are the Audi A1, the BMW Mini Countryman, the Ford C-MAX and Ford Grand C-MAX, the Kia Sportage, the Opel/Vauxhall Meriva and the facelifted VW Passat. The Nissan Micra was rewarded with four stars.

Latin NCAP joining worldwide NCAP consumer testing for automotive safety

Consumers in Latin America and the Caribbean will now be able to compare the safety performance of new cars from leading global brands.

The launch of Latin NCAP has taken place on 18th October 2010 simultaneously in Montevideo, Uruguay and São Paolo, Brazil. On this day, the new association released test results of nine cars from the popular small vehicle class using the same frontal impact test that is included in Euro NCAP's test programme.

Latin America is a rapidly growing automobile market and source of vehicle production. It is also experiencing high levels of road fatalities and serious injuries. Latin NCAP is the first independent programme to be established in one of the world's newly motorizing regions and is a historic step forward in the availability of consumer crash test information. The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), FIA Foundation, ICRT (International Consumer Research and Testing) and GRMF (the Gonzalo Rodriguez Memorial Foundation) with support of the IDB (the Inter-American Development Bank), have joined forces in setting up Latin NCAP. The programme is expected to contribute to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 which could save five million lives on the world's roads if successfully implemented.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP, says 'We congratulate the partners in Latin NCAP for taking this important step for the Latin American and Caribbean region. Latin NCAP will not only contribute to raising the standards of car safety and to increasing the levels of protection given to drivers, adult passengers and children, but also help increase much needed public awareness about the importance of safer road transport.'

The nine cars recently assessed by Latin NCAP have been subjected to impact crash testing and safety equipment, including airbags and seatbelts, for drivers, passengers and children has been rated. Separate star ratings for the safety of adults and children have been given with five stars awarded for the best possible performances. The results of the tested cars have been presented on 18th October 2010 during the launch of the programme both in Montevideo, Uruguay and São Paolo, Brazil. Euro NCAP reveals today's best safety innovations

Paris - Euro NCAP presented the first Euro NCAP Advanced rewards at a press conference held on October 1st 2010 at the Paris Motor Show. Ten technologies developed by car manufacturers were rewarded for offering scientifically proven safety benefits.

Euro NCAP Advanced is a Euro NCAP initiative in response to the rapid development of new technologies available when buying cars for which there is no independent assessment. By rewarding advanced technologies, Euro NCAP is now providing an incentive to car manufacturers to accelerate the standard fitment of important safety equipment across their model ranges as well as offering more comprehensive guidance to consumers about the safety of new cars, helping them to make the right purchase decision.

The organization has rewarded the first set of manufacturers for their efforts in their development of new safety features. The 2010 rewarded advanced technologies are:

Euro NCAP Advanced is open to any technical system that has a proven safety benefit, whether it is primary, secondary or tertiary, as long as it is available as an option on one of the Euro NCAP tested cars and not already addressed by the current star rating. The overall rating consists of an independent verification of a car by Euro NCAP based on crash tests and published protocols, The Euro NCAP Advanced assessment is based entirely on manufacturers' data generated in their own defined test conditions and rigorously analysed by a team of experts appointed by Euro NCAP. In addition, Euro NCAP Advanced requires manufacturers to identify exactly what the safety impact of their technology may be in European countries, taking into consideration the different infrastructure, jurisdictions and at times driver behaviour.

Car manufacturers are pleased that Euro NCAP is launching an initiative which raises awareness of significant systems offering a safety benefit. Dr van Ratingen said: 'Carmakers were involved in the development of the process and were very keen to get their systems into the assessment. We ended up having almost too many dossiers to cope with and we have more coming up in the next months, which is a clear sign that the industry is actively driving safety improvements, even when green cars are top on the agenda.'

Most systems rewarded at the Paris Motor Show were developed a few years ago and have been in the marketplace for at least a year or two. In the future, Euro NCAP Advanced will be able to use the methodology to assess completely new technologies, tackling areas of safety which have not yet been addressed.

Sometimes, it has proven very challenging for some carmakers to present a convincing case on which the Euro NCAP Advanced reward can be based. Not all of the technologies put forward in this first set of assessments have been rewarded. However, manufacturers can further develop their dossiers to demonstrate more clearly the benefits of their technologies, and Euro NCAP would be happy to reassess their systems at that stage.

So far, the dialog with manufacturers on their technologies is helping Euro NCAP to better understand the issues with the current generation of systems and fully digest the way carmakers have evaluated the performance of their systems both in laboratory tests as on the real roads.

The reward systems works two ways: on one hand by rewarding new innovations, Euro NCAP is now helping accelerate uptake of important safety features with the aim to make consumers more aware on the availability and function of these systems. On the other hand, this ultimately provides Euro NCAP with the knowledge to develop future protocols that might be included in the current star rating. Indeed, the overall rating system with its four pillars is designed to make inclusion of new methods, as early as 2013, thus challenging vehicle manufacturers to make all-round safer cars.

Today, at the eSafety Challenge Euro NCAP is announcing Euro NCAP Advanced, a reward system for new and emerging safety technologies.

Recent technological advancements have considerably broadened the automotive safety landscape. Features like Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Attention Assist, Autonomous Braking and Emergency Call are increasingly offered as options by car makers on their newest models. However, with so many technologies entering the market, and with no independent advice on the safety benefit they offer, many consumers are left feeling confused.

Euro NCAP Advanced aims to provide car buyers with clear guidance about the safety benefits which these new technologies offer them and their families. The new reward system, complementing Euro NCAP's existing star rating scheme, will recognize and reward manufacturers who promote those new safety technologies which have a scientifically proven safety benefit. By rewarding technologies which may currently be fitted only on luxury models or as options, Euro NCAP will provide an incentive to manufacturers to accelerate the standard fitment of important safety equipment across their entire model ranges, bringing safety benefits to all.

Many of the technologies are so new that no accepted standards exist to assess them. Euro NCAP has developed a unique methodology which allows the potential safety benefits of any new technology to be determined. Unlike Euro NCAP's well established assessments involving physical tests at a crash laboratory, the new process is based entirely on the assessment of scientific evidence presented by the vehicle manufacturer. An independent panel of experts looks at the extent of the safety problem which a new technology aims to address. Through a logical and rigorous analysis of the way in which the technology has been developed, tested and validated, and from any real-world experience that may exist, the system's performance and its expected effectiveness can be determined. Recognition of the potential benefit of these new technologies in no way undermines the importance of basic crash safety: cars are eligible for a Euro NCAP Advanced reward only if they have already achieved a creditable three star rating in the overall rating scheme.

At the eSafety Challenge in Millbrook, Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP said "With these rewards Euro NCAP will add a new dimension to its mission. Euro NCAP commences it's focus on Plug-In vehicles and advanced safety technologies

Today, Euro NCAP, the organisation dedicated to revealing the safety of new cars, releases the crash test results for four vehicles: the Honda CR-Z, the Suzuki Swift, the Citroen C4 and the Hyundai ix35. In this latest set of results, Euro NCAP is glad to announce that all of the cars received a maximum five star rating.

The results show that manufacturers are rising to the challenges of Euro NCAP's new rating scheme and are continuing to make safety a priority. The Honda CR-Z demonstrates that good all round safety needs not be compromised by a fuel efficient petrol-electric hybrid powertrain: its pedestrian protection result continues the high scores achieved by recently tested Hondas. Several manufacturers are expected to release fully electric vehicles in the near future. Euro NCAP is poised to test them to ensure that high safety standards are maintained, with the first results expected early in 2011.

From October onwards, Euro NCAP will be able to offer even more comprehensive guidance to consumers about the safety offered by new cars. Euro NCAP Advanced will assess those technologies which are beyond the scope of the current crash tests. At least one of the cars presented today has a driver assistance technology which could be assessed by Euro NCAP Advanced. The organisation will release the findings of its first assessments at the Paris Motor Show on 1st October.

Euro NCAP's Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said, "I am looking forward to the launch of Euro NCAP Advanced. The new assessments will broaden the scope of our safety assessments and will greatly enhance the information we are able to provide to consumers. It is reassuring that, as well as developing these new advanced technologies, manufacturers are not neglecting fundamental crash protection and today's results show that car-makers are still striving for the very best levels of protection."

Three of the cars tested for this release have electronic stability control completely as standard. The Citroën C4 is offered with ESC as an option on the lowest specification in some countries but qualifies for five stars as sales of ESC as standard equipment are expected to far outstrip those of the optionally equipped car. Euro NCAP's requirements on ESC have encouraged much broader fitment of this important technology by car manufacturers, ahead of the European legislation which will begin in 2012 for new car models and 2014 for all cars. Three of the cars demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in a rear-end collision, the Citroën C4 being the only one rated as marginal in this regard. However, the C4 was the only car to be rewarded for an active, driver-set speed limitation device which assists drivers in maintaining a safe driving speed. Euro NCAP believes that car manufacturers who are committed to safety need to be justly awarded with a good overall rating and is encouraging all car manufacturers to reach such good results in the future.

Euro NCAP to announce new initiative at the upcoming eSafety Challenge

Before attending the eSafety Challenge in the UK next month, Euro NCAP presents an overview of its recent achievements and new objectives in car safety.

Established in 1997, Euro NCAP provides consumers with an independent assessment of the safety performance of major car brands sold in Europe. Backed by eleven members Euro NCAP is an entirely independent actor for comprehensive car safety and consumer information whose standards enjoy international recognition.

Euro NCAP's mission originated in the need to provide crash testing implementing higher standards than the legal requirements. A detailed test protocol was thus developed, involving expert assessment results for each car, which were subsequently extended to cover a wider range of crashes and safety technologies.

The first results presented in February 1997 attracted considerable media attention, despite heavy criticism from car manufacturers. Industry representatives claimed that assessment criteria would be too stringent to allow for a four or five star rating. In July 1997 however Euro NCAP announced the first car to be awarded four stars in occupant protection, and subsequently the first five star award in June 2001.

Euro NCAP results show that significant improvements in car safety performance have been achieved since 1997.

In late 2008, Euro NCAP released the results of its first rear impact (or whiplash) tests, revealing that many manufacturers had a long way to go in preventing whiplash injury.The whiplash test was integrated in Euro NCAP's new comprehensive rating scheme launched in February 2009.

The new overall rating system rewards the comprehensive safety of a vehicle, including adult, child and pedestrian protection, but also for the first time considers the safety potential of advanced driver assistance technologies, such as electronic stability control. The new system was introduced to demonstrate the importance of all-round safety performance and to allow future inclusion of new emerging safety technologies. From 2009 onwards, a stepwise increase of demands is foreseen, making it progressively more challenging to reach the overall 5 star level based on the current assessment criteria.

Euro NCAP's plans and objectives however do not stop here. With the star rating as a solid basis for overall safety, Euro NCAP is planning to highlight the importance of new advanced safety features on offer by manufacturers This new initiative, to be formally announced at the eSafety Challenge – International eSafety Conference aims at guiding the consumer's buying decision while promoting those technologies that have a proven benefit to saving lives and reducing injuries.

The eSafety Challenge, an annual event that promotes and highlights the life-saving potential of advanced vehicle safety technologies, is scheduled to take place this year on 13 July 2010 in Millbrook, UK.

Following this launch, Euro NCAP will launch and reward selected car manufacturers at the Paris Motor Show on 1 October 2010 for their innovation in advanced safety features that were assessed under the new methodology.

Both the eSafety Challenge and the 2010 Paris Motor Show will therefore present unique opportunities for Euro NCAP to present its new initiative and share these exciting strategies for the future of safer cars.

Euro NCAP elects professor Andre Seeck as new president

The members of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) have selected Professor Andre Seeck, head of the division 'Vehicle Technology' with the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. Andre Seeck succeeds Professor Claes Tingvall from the Swedish Transport Administration, who has taken this role since 2004.

Andre Seeck, the first Euro NCAP President from Germany, has accepted chairmanship for the next term of two years.

Andre Seeck has been a member of the Euro NCAP Board of Directors since 2000 representing the German Federal Ministry of Transport. He has held a range of positions at BASt in the areas of Passive Safety and Biomechanics, Vehicle Safety Assessment, Driver Assistance Systems and Vehicle Engineering. Andre has intimate knowledge and experience in vehicle safety regulations and has built up an extensive international network with key stakeholders in and outside industry.

Announcing the appointment, Claes Tingvall said "I am delighted that Andre has agreed to take this important role. He possesses a unique combination of technical know-how, stakeholder relationships and firsthand experience on Euro NCAP's Board of Directors. The Board looks forward to work with Andre to continue the success of the programme and broaden our impact on the safety market".

Accepting his position, Andre Seeck said "I am very pleased and honoured to accept this post. I am eager to make a positive contribution to development of Euro NCAP and to drive forward the initiatives of the organisation in good cooperation with all involved".

Euro NCAP has 11 members representing the citizens and consumers in EU-27. The independent organisation provides motoring consumers with a realistic and objective assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe.

Euro NCAP launches new multi-lingual website - Safety information for millions more

Today, Euro NCAP is reaching out to a wider range of consumers by launching its website www.euroncap.com for the first time in two new languages: Dutch and French. Euro NCAP intends to release further languages Catalan, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and the Swedish in the following months. Today, Euro NCAP also releases the results for three new cars: the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, BMW 5-series and the Mazda CX-7.

There are over 500 million consumers in the 27 European Member States. There are 20 official languages as well as 60 other indigenous and non-indigenous languages spoken over the European geographical area. According to a recent Eurobarometer poll carried out in 29 countries, only 51% of Europeans speak English either as their mother tongue or as a foreign language and a further 44% of Europeans admit not knowing any other language than their own. Furthermore, a multi-lingual European open to speaking to other languages is likely to be young, well-educated or still studying. In conclusion, there is a large part of the European population that has had no access to Euro NCAP's safety information on www.euroncap.com, given that up to now the web site has been entirely in English.

Over the next couple of months, this is all set to change. Today, Euro NCAP releases information for the first time on its website in Dutch and French, languages that will make access easier for some 90 million people in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland. These two new languages will be closely followed by Catalan, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish. This first round of languages has been chosen due to the large car markets and significant car buying public in these countries. Moreover Euro NCAP members have also supported the launch of languages directed at their own consumers.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says "This is one more step in Euro NCAP's long-term objective to provide information on the safety performance of today's cars to every consumer in Europe. Information is power and this power will ensure consumers can protect themselves when they drive. "

Today, Euro NCAP also issued the results for the safety performance of three cars. Of these three cars, the BMW 5 series achieved the highest result in pedestrian protection with a respectable 78%. The car has an active bonnet, so that when a pedestrian is struck, the bonnet is lifted from its position as a result, creating more space to absorb the energy that usually results in injury. The BMW 5 series also scored 100% in Safety Assist as the car has electronic stability control fitted as standard, seatbelt reminders in the front and rear, as well as a driver set speed limitation device.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is equipped with a reactive seat and head restraint offering good protection. The BMW seat and head restraint also provides good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear impact. The Mazda CX -7 offered poor protection against whiplash.

Fewer winners drive out in latest results

Today, Euro NCAP releases the crash test results for five new cars the Citroen Nemo, the Kia Venga, the Nissan Cube, the Seat Exeo and the Toyota Verso. In this latest set of results only one car, the Toyota Verso, receives Euro NCAP's maximum five star rating. New Euro NCAP rules and further demands in European legislation in 2010, means this year carmakers face even tougher challenges.

In 2010, Euro NCAP raises the bar for carmakers to achieve five stars across three areas of safety protection. Performance thresholds for Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection rise from 75% to 80% and from 70% to a 75% respectively. However, it is in Pedestrian Protection where the difference is felt the keenest increasing the minimum level required from 25% to 40%. The Toyota Verso is the only car to receive a maximum five star award in today's results, with good scores achieved in all areas and a worthy 69% in pedestrian protection.

Most manufacturers today offer several solutions to the family wagon formula, some of which are based on their commercial range. Euro NCAP has noticed that the latter cars are particularly poorly fitted with regard to their safety features and equipment. The latest model sold by Citroen, the Nemo Multispace, is a direct derivative of the Nemo commercial van. The car achieved an overall rating of three stars and a lacklustre 29% in Safety Assist as Electronic Stability Control and Speed Limitation Assistance are both not available as options. The low score in Adult Occupant Protection is attributed to the lack of a standard curtain airbag and poor whiplash performance of the seats.

The Seat Exeo, a saloon car based on the previous generation Audi A4, achieved an overall rating of four stars. Stiff structures in the dashboard presented an elevated risk of injury to knees and femurs, which the fitted knee airbag was unable to mitigate. However, the car did well in protection of pedestrians and the infants in the rear. The Nissan Cube, otherwise a solid performer, was let down by its child occupant protection during the frontal impact test with a overall four star rating as the result.

The Kia Venga also achieved a four star rating, although not without problems. During the frontal test the driver seat belt was partially cut by the lower seat rail, a serious flaw that potentially can undermine proper restraint of both frontal occupants. Kia swiftly introduced a solution and is currently taking market action to respond to Euro NCAP's findings.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says "Any reduction of the performance of the seat belt not only poses a serious risk to the driver and passenger, but also compromises the validity of the Euro NCAP rating awarded to the car. Customers must ensure that the modification is fitted, so that the four star rating applies."

Euro NCAP's top five achievers of 2009

For the first time, Euro NCAP can now release its top five safest cars of 2009, based on their maximum five star award and their overall score. Top of this list is the Volkswagen Golf VI that was first tested in 2008 under the former rating scheme and was re-released in 2009.

The Honda Insight Hybrid and Toyota Prius, two fuel-efficient vehicles tested in 2009, were second and third respectively in Euro NCAP's list of safest, crash-tested cars. In fourth place is the Hyundai i20. There are three joint winners for fifth place – the Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and the Opel/Vauxhall Astra. Euro NCAP's poorest results of the year were achieved by the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, which both received three stars.

In 2009, Euro NCAP crash tested thirty three car models, using up to a total of three cars, three front seats, four child seats and an array of spare parts per model. To achieve the overall rating, the car model is usually put through four crash tests, a component test and is assessed by an inspector who considers tests results and the safety equipment and features of the car. In 2009, upon the request of the manufacturer Euro NCAP also considered results from vehicles crash-tested in 2007/2008 and carried out the necessary tests and assessment to upgrade them to a result applicable under the new rating scheme.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says "This is the first time we can calculate results that demonstrate an overall safety performance. Even though these cars excel in different areas of safety, their presence in the top-five list indicates that they are among the top safety achievers of the year".

In 2010, the threshold to achieve Euro NCAP's maximum five stars rises from 75% to 80% in Adult Occupant Protection and from 70% to 75% in Child Occupant Protection. The threshold for Pedestrian Protection rises to 40%. The first results for vehicles tested under this stricter assessment will be released on 3^rdMarch 2010.

Today, Euro NCAP also releases a list of results in an easily printable table of all cars tested and upgraded in 2009.

Euro NCAP, the organisation dedicated to revealing the safety of new cars, today releases the results for twelve vehicles. Ten of these vehicles achieved Euro NCAP’s maximum award of five stars in the overall rating. However, two of the twelve results released make an important point: the consumer can never be too complacent when it comes to brand loyalty.

Recent surveys have shown that one of the top factors influencing a consumer’s choice of vehicle is perception of the reliability of a brand. Results released today by Euro NCAP reveal that some brands can still surprise and disappoint, overturning preconceived ideas of their safety. Chevrolet made headlines in 2006 when the Aveo received a poor one star strikethrough result following a Euro NCAP test. In the past three years, Chevrolet’s safety engineers have clearly made laudable investments in safety. The new Chevrolet Cruze receives a five-star result in Euro NCAP’s new overall rating with an almost perfect Adult Occupant score of 96%. In contrast, Toyota has a string of five star results behind them, including the Avensis and the IQ earlier this year and more recently for the impressive fuel-efficient Prius, but today - the Urban Cruiser, tested as an initiative from a Euro NCAP member, receives a disappointing three-star rating. This was due to a weak result of 58% in Adult Occupant Protection.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s Secretary General says ‘We congratulate Chevrolet. The company has bounced back with two cars that have a commendable level of safety performance. The result from Toyota is disappointing, but in 2010, we predict further results like these as Euro NCAP’s next stage of the rating scheme kicks in and requirements become even tougher. Consumers should check www.euroncap.com when looking to buy a new car and should NOT make presumptions about a car’s safety performance due to the brand it carries. Given Euro NCAP’s test and assessments continually evolve - consumers must also remember to consider the year of test when looking at results.’

Euro NCAP’s top scorers with five star results are the BMW X1, Chevrolet Cruze, Citroën DS3, Infiniti FX, Mazda 3, Mercedes E-Class, Mercedes GLK, Opel Astra, Peugeot 5008 and the Volkswagen Scirocco. The Chevrolet Spark missed out on a five star award as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is not fitted as standard on any variant. In contrast ESC is fitted as standard in all variants in the other cars in today’s line-up - a direct result of Euro NCAP’s incentive of points under the new rating scheme.

In this month’s release, the Chevrolet Cruze, the Opel Astra and the Volkswagen Scirocco all have seats and head restraints that offer good whiplash protection.

The Citroën DS3, Infiniti FX, Peugeot 5008 and the Mercedes GLK have driver controlled speed limitation systems fitted as standard or soon to be introduced as standard. These systems greatly assist the driver in maintaining the safest speed according to the driving environment.

2009 was an important year for Euro NCAP with the launch of its new Rating Scheme, and recognition came today as the organisation was awarded Prince Michael’s Special International Award for Innovation. In presenting the award, His Royal Highness the Prince Michael of Kent recognised Euro NCAP’s outstanding achievement in accelerating the introduction of safer cars to European roads.

His Royal Highness described Euro NCAP as ‘instrumental in designing and implementing innovative programmes that save so many lives’. The award was presented during the Make Roads Safe – a Call for a Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign event held in Moscow, Russia today. This week, the campaign is calling on governments attending the first UN global Ministerial Conference to agree action to reduce by 50% the projected increase in road deaths to 2020.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General, who accepted the award on behalf of Euro NCAP, says ‘we are delighted to accept this reward, which recognises Euro NCAP’s work in ensuring our testing programme remains current and up-to-date with the latest safety technologies. It makes us all very proud and our hard work worthwhile. Thank you for all the support given by consumers and industry. ’

Prince Michael’s International Road Safety Awards are made in recognition of outstanding contributions to improving road safety. Euro NCAP was also presented Prince Michael’s Premier Award and International Award for Road Safety in 2003.

The Make Roads Safe Campaign is calling for a Decade of Action for Road Safety to tackle the number of accidents on roads worldwide, which takes the lives of 1.3 million people and injures over 50 million each year.

Euro NCAP, the organisation that assesses the safety of new cars, today releases the results for eight new cars. Seven cars in this line-up received Euro NCAP’s maximum five star award, whilst one car, the Citroen C3, received a four star result. Two of this month’s top-scorers are amongst the car industry’s most fuelefficient vehicles: the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius 3.

The latest results for the Insight and the Prius 3 show that good fuel economy need not stand in the way of a high level of safety performance. Euro NCAP in particular commends these hybrid vehicles for their impressive pedestrian scores that not only fulfil Euro NCAP’s current five star requirements, but already meet the organisation’s challenging 2012 targets. Pedestrian protection is an area that has long been underprioritised by carmakers. Last year barely 25% of the cars tested achieved more than two stars for pedestrian protection. However with the introduction of a new regulation in Europe this year and a stronger focus maintained by Euro NCAP, the tide is quickly turning.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s Secretary General says ‘The technology and know-how is out there for carmakers to deliver vehicles with better pedestrian protection. Honda and Toyota are giving us a glimpse of the cars of the future that consider the natural and social environment in its entirety.’

Euro NCAP’s top scorers with five star results are the Honda Insight, Kia Sorento, Renault Grand Scenic, Skoda Yeti, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Prius 3 and the Volkswagen Polo. The Citroen C3 missed out on Euro NCAP’s highest accolade of five stars as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), although available on some variants in the model range, is not expected to be fitted as standard in sufficient numbers to qualify for points. In contrast ESC is fitted as standard across the model range in the other cars in today’s line-up, or will be standard equipment in the great majority of sales – a direct result of Euro NCAP’s incentive of points under the new rating scheme.

The two French cars - Renault Grand Scenic and the Citroen C3 have both introduced a driver controlled speed limitation system as standard on some variants and as an option on others, which Euro NCAP rewarded during the Safety Assist assessment. These systems greatly assist the driver to maintain the safest speed according to the driving environment.

Some manufacturers have responded quickly to Euro NCAP’s call for better whiplash protection. In this month’s release, the Honda Insight, the Kia Sorento and the Skoda Yeti all have seats and head restraints that offer good whiplash protection. In contrast, the whiplash protection offered by the Citroen C3 was found to be poor.
